W2W SPECIAL EVENT STATION MAY 1-2, 2010 1300Z to 0640Z
The AERO Club in Middle River, Maryland (FM19sh) will be running a special events HF station celebrating the 80th Anniversary of the Martin State Airport. The land near the airport was purchased by Glenn L. Martin in 1929. Originally the landing strip ran parallel to Eartern Blvd, but later during the 1930's the present runway was laid out perpendicular to the road. During WWII the airstrip was used in testing B-26 Martin Marauders. During the 1960's the airport was used to fly Titan II rockets from Middle River to Cape Kennedy, Fla. for the Gemini Manned Space Program. Then while the airport was soley owned by the Martin Co., it was the largest privately owned airport in the country, and perhaps the world. The airport was sold to the state in 1975 and is now primarily used for General Aviation and the Air National Guard.
